Stopping Burglars, Solar Heat & Hurricane Damage

Last year Armor Glass® security film was installed on a woman’s house in Houston.  Five days later a burglar tried to beak in, and failed!  Several Armor Glass customers have had burglars attempt to break through their windows containing its security film. In each case the film was not breached.
Are you wasting money on flimsy 2 mil solar film that only blocks the sun but doesn’t protect your glass from break-ins and hurricanes?

Why not get something that does both?

If you are worried about burglars, suffering from a hot house – and never want to “board up” again for a hurricane -- Armor Glass has the solution.  Its 8 mil security films work 24/7 and costs a fraction of shutters and impact glass. Think of it as “invisible burglar bars” or “invisible shutters.”  Armor Glass pays for itself over time in energy savings.

Armor Glass security films combine energy savings with security.  They reduce solar heat up to 79% while protecting your weakest link from window breach and losses, caused by burglars, tornadoes, hurricanes, hail, golf balls, and explosions. They cut 99% of harmful UV rays that fade your furnishings and cause skin cancer.

The same film was installed in Washington DC federal buildings after 9/11, including the Pentagon.

Beat the Triple Digit Heat, Save $ -- and Get Security!

Texas is expecting to set record triple digit heat records.  Utilities are asking people to "cut back" on energy use. There is a simple way to do that, save money and get security at the same time. It's called "Armor Glass security film."

Solar film alone will cut solar heat but it provides ZERO protection from burglars and hurricanes. It is thin, less than the thickness of paper, and easily breached.

However, Solar+Security film does BOTH - cuts solar heat up to 79% AND provides protection from breakins and hurricanes - all at the same time!

So why waste money on solar only film when Solar+Security film will pay for itself over time by cutting your energy use, cooling you off, and protecting your family at the same time?

If everyone in Texas installed it, our electric use would be cut in half or more! There would be fewer break-ins and less damage from blown out windows caused by hurricanes, tornadoes, hail and errant golf balls!

"Debby" - Latest Predictions. Tracking WEST

The weather experts say that Tropical Storm "Debby" will spend the week in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to track WEST towards Texas.

That could change but it is a reminder that hurricanes are unpredictable and you should be prepared regardless. This has been a strange year in which we had two hurricanes form even before the June 1 beginning of hurricane season!

"It was the first time four tropical storms have been recorded before July 1 during the Atlantic hurricane season since record keeping began in 1851. Alberto was the first storm this year. It formed off the South Carolina coast on May 19, almost two weeks before the hurricane season officially began June 1."

According to the Houston Chronicle's Eric Berger "in the 62 years since 1950, the average date of the "D" storm forming in an an Atlantic season is August 25" - two months from now! "The average "D" storm has an intensity of a CAT 1 hurricane.

In 2008, when Hurricane IKE hit Houston in mid-September it was a CAT 1, yet it caused billions in damages. With temperatures setting record highs, a September storm could be much more powerful than IKE was.

Stay tuned and Get Prepared! We are a long way for the peak of the season.

Rice's First Hurricane "Shelter in Place" Safe Building Ready for Debby etc

2012's first Gulf of Mexico hurricane “Debby” is forming.

Just in time for Debby and her kind, Rice University recently found a way to protect its students and staff during hurricanes -- while also saving enough energy to pay for itself.

It is something the university has never had before in its long history.

Rice University sits in a major Hurricane Zone on the Gulf of Mexico (Houston).  When Hurricane IKE hit Houston as a CAT 1 hurricane in September 2008, Rice administrators were concerned about their students’ safety.  In an effort to protect the students they moved them from one building to another, but then they had a rude shock when they realized that each building they took the students to had the same vulnerability - fragile glass windows!

Flying glass is lethal. During the storm, buildings all over Houston lost windows, causing extensive internal damages.  Windows blew out over 150 miles inland. IKE even blew out power lines all the way to Ohio! And it was only a CAT 1.

IKE cost Houston and surrounding counties billions in losses. Chase Tower was stripped of windows. Imagine the damage if due to hotter temperatures we are hit with a CAT 2 or 3 storm?

Armor Glass offered Rice a solution. We would “armor their glass” and also solve their heat problem -- cutting over 50% of the solar heat making people sweat inside and 99% of the UV that destroys interiors (and causes skin cancer.) The energy savings will pay for the installation costs in less than 5 years. After that, the university is making money by spending less on energy costs over its life.

The university will also save by not having to replace furnishings as often due to UV damage.

So people at Rice recently had its Weiss dorm building retrofitted with Armor Glass security film so it can serve as a "Shelter in Place" location. Students have said they love the improvement.  It is a building which has hardened its windows to protect students and staff when Houston is struck with another Hurricane like IKE, or bigger.

Have you noticed? We live in glass palaces. Glass hasn't changed in 5,000 years humans have been using it. Until Armor Glass.

Glass has a natural enemy. Flying tree limbs and other wind-borne debris during a hurricane easily breaks bare glass, unleashing nature's fury and flying shards of glass on students and people in any building in hurricane or tornado-force winds. All windows have to be armored to prevent even greater losses (not just from storms but from human intrusion as well.)

When IKE hit Houston one high rise penthouse had its glass wall blow in. The couple inside tried to open the door to get out of the flying glass, gale winds and rain, but the wind pressure was too great to open it.

Rice leaders should be given credit for this vision and investment that will repay itself many times over. The safety to students is greatly enhanced, the rooms are more comfortable, the university saves on its power bills beyond the cost of the installation -- and the campus gets its first "safe building" where students and staff can Shelter in Place during a dangerous storm.

Just in time for Debby, and beyond.

Something is BREWING in the Gulf of Mexico - Debby?

The weather folks say something is brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. If it developments it will be called "Debby."

Standby for updates. Are you prepared?

Possible Tropical Storm by End of the Week?

Keep your eye on the weather. There is a mass of unstable air across the Gulf of Mexico and into the Atlantic.  It could form a Tropical depression or Storm or maybe more by the end of the week...here is the link to the Weather Channel story.

Stay tuned. We are just getting into hurricane season - and the peak is usually September but with all the heat we are having anything could happen at any time!

Hurricane Expected to Hit Mexico - May enter Gulf

The Weather Channel reports that a storm expected to hit Mexico's west coast in the next few days could reach hurricane strength.

The interesting thing is the statement at the end: "could ultimately beget a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean or Gulf, but at this juncture it's too soon to know if/where/when."   In other words it might generate a Gulf of Mexico cyclone that could threaten the Texas Gulf Coast.

Stay tuned for developments. In the meantime, get prepared!  Remember Humberto? It went from nothing to a full fledged Hurricane in less than 24 hours!

Are you prepared for that?

Night time Break in - Memorial

Yesterday I went to a nice house in Memorial where the lady showed me a window that had been broken - in the FRONT of the house. But what she told me was shocking. This wasn't the usual "break in during the day when people are at work" story.

She said that the person had entered the house sometime between midnight and 6 am - when they were sleeping! He stole a laptop and Iphone, despite their being a dog in a back room. When they woke up, the husband asked the wife if she had gone out and left the front door open. That was news to her. That's when they discovered the broken glass and missing items.

This is another case where Armor Glass security film would have made entry difficult - the guy broke a minipane window near the window latch, then reached in and opened both locks!

I have been hearing stories like this from Roundtop to Rosharon to all parts of Houston, etc.  Are you prepared?

Cheap solar film would not have prevented this break in. All it does is block the sun. Our solar security film does BOTH - blocks the sun and the burglars, not to mention windborne debris from a hurricane that breaks a window and uplifts the roof!

UV Damage from GLASS

Last night I saw a shocking photo on NBC News of a truck driver who had one side of his face exposed to sunlight for years as he drove his truck. UV from the sun had caused his skin on the left side of his face to look like the photo above.

Ordinary glass does NOT block harmful UV, which causes skin cancer (our No. 1 cancer). BUT our Armor Glass Security Film DOES block 99.7% of UV rays, whether in your office, house or car. Here is a link to an article on the subject in the NY Post:

Check us out. It is yet another reason to get Armor Glass protection on your glass. Don't wait until your furniture is faded and your skin looks like this to take action...

New study shows region's extreme wind risk in a monster storm

A new study has come out detailing the billions in losses that would be caused by a major hurricane sweeping over Houston. Here is the link.

This article has a flaw - it only mentions one potential solution "shutters" which is unrealistic. Can you put shutters on glass buildings? Not really. Are shutters economically sensible? Not really. But there is a better solution that can be applied to existing buildings and new ones as well.

Despite giving numerous presentations to prestigious architectural firms, I've found that builders and architects in Texas still do not know about "security window film" like my company Armor Glass sells. I call it "invisible shutters."  You could also call it "invisible burglar bars."

Hurricane-rated Security film provides essentially the same protection as shutters for 10% of the cost of shutters.  Security film also cuts solar heat and harmful UV and protects from burglars, which open shutters do not.

Our company recently finished installing our Armor Glas Security Film on a dorm at Rice (Weiss). During IKE in 2008, the students were moved from one glass building to another before the administrators realized that they were no safer. Now, the students can "shelter in place" at Weiss during a hurricane. The film is even anchored to the window frames so they can take a Large Missile impact without blowing in.

And because the dorm rooms used to be so hot from sun coming through the glass, we used a tinted version that cuts 55% of the solar heat - saving enough energy to pay for itself in a couple years!

We need to upgrade our buildings folks BEFORE the next big one. IKE blew out windows all over town - and it was only a CAT 1!

Even that small storm stripped windows out of buildings like Chase Tower downtown. Had they had our film and frame attachment installed, they would not have lost a single window, even if broken. They would have spared tenants months of construction delays and lost equipment and documents which were sucked out of windowless offices.

Being prepared means taking action before the "next big one" hits. Are you prepared?
